Gravity

A force that pulls things towards the earth.
Tennis.png

Imagine the earth as a tennis ball. Now imagine there is a rubber band wrapped around the ball.

If you place your finger between the ball and the band and try to stretch it out you will be pulled back by the force of the band.

Now imagine the entire ball is covered by bands. This is like gravity pulling everything back towards the earth.

The legend goes that while resting under an apple tree, Isaac Newton was struck on the head by a falling apple.

Newton wondered why do all objects fall towards the earth? Why not sideways or up towards the sky?

The answer of course is gravity. Gravity is the force that pulls objects towards the earth.

When we throw a ball in the air or jump off the ground it is gravity that pulls us back down. If it weren't for gravity we would keep going up and up and up.
